ONÇA...MUSIC FROM THE EDGE OF THE AMAZON

Originating with percussion led, Afro Brasilian influenced songs, ONÇA conveys intensity of performance with humour and vitality. Their unique style springs from the rich well of Afro Brasilian ritual music. Musical forms such as Maracatu, Xoté, Tambor de Crioula, Cacuria, Samba de Roda, Manguebeat and Afoxé are at the heart of ONÇA’s sound. Percussion fused with other instrumentation gives a danceable contemporary feel while remaining true to the swing and dark passion of Brasil.

ONÇA play at a number of club and festival gigs throughout the year nationally. Their eclectic, dark energetic sound has been heard at numerous Arts and Gig venues as well as a number of Festivals including 'The Drogheda Samba Festival, Sliabh an Iarainn (Roscommon), Langton's and Club 51 (Kilkenny).

The Amazonian Jaguar is known as ONÇA and it shares it's name with one of the eclectic range of percussion instruments (also called a cuica) used in the set. Many of the styles played by ONÇA are rarely heard beyond the region of Brazil where they originate. The group mix these unusual rhythms with the their own western sensibilities to deliver a unique, but crowd friendly mix of music.
